Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of well over 100 cannabinoids of the hemp plant known so far, which is said to have many positive properties. Although the mechanism of action of cannabidiol has not yet been fully researched, it has been proven that CBD is not psychoactive and therefore cannot cause intoxication.

CBD flowers can be consumed in different ways. The easiest way is to crush the flowers first and then smoke them in a pipe or as a CBD cigarette. However, as this method of consumption can put a lot of strain on the lungs, experts advise a gentler method such as a vaporizer. Anyone who wants to place food containing hemp extracts or cannabinoids on the market or use them as a food ingredient must consider whether these foods are considered novel foods. This is the case if it cannot be proven that the food was already consumed to a significant extent in Switzerland or the EU before 15 May 1997. However, cannabinoids and hemp extracts are basically novel foods, which is why they cannot legally be added to food at will.

In parts of the hemp plant, more than eighty so-called cannabinoids are found naturally. The most important are the psychotropic delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the non-psychotropic cannabidiol (CBD).
For the individual substances of the cannabinoids, no significant consumption as food has been documented so far, neither in Switzerland nor in the EU before 15 May 1997. Therefore, the following substances are to be assessed as novel foods:

– cannabinoids from any other plant containing cannabinoids;
– synthetically produced cannabinoids.
Cannabinoids, like hemp extracts, are listed as novel foods in the Novel Food Catalogue of the European Commission. Consequently, they can in principle only be placed on the market with a licence from the FSVO or an authorisation from the European Commission.
